**BAFTA 2008 AWARD WINNER FOR BEST ENTERTAINMENT SHOW**
Gary's War sees the return of inspired comedy character Gary: Tank Commander. Just back from his tour of duty in Iraq, Sgt Gary McLintoch talks us through life on the front line; the fight for hearts and minds; and why Iraqis love to hit statues with flip flops...
This one off show follows the Erasure-loving tank commander on leave at
home, guiding us round the Edinburgh housing estate he grew up in, as he recollects events from Iraq and gives his own unique take on the build up to and aftermath of the Iraq War: "There are no easy options, it's a
bit like Deal or No Deal in that respect".
Spoof documentary Gary's War promises to provide a clever and satirical take on life on the front line, using archive news material and in-depth interviews, intercut with genuine news footage including soundbites from Blair, Bush and Brown.
As well as satirising the conflict, McLintoch has a talent for flying off on tangents; hilarious flights of fancy that still have a poignant ring of truth about them.
Greg McHugh initially created Gary's character backstage at the
Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2005 with fellow stand-up Will Andrews. They
developed the persona of Gary between shows, filming and improvising as
Greg drove around the city.
The 15 minute comic short Gary: Tank Commander was chosen as the lead
off film in the Funny Cuts slot, a new E4 series for emerging comedy
talent. It was broadcast in May 2006 and went on to gain a Scottish
BAFTA nomination.
Greg went on to perform the character of Gary in the BAFTA Award winning
Channel 4 Comedy Lab Blowout where the Tank Commander explains that one
of the fringe benefits of being in Iraq is that you get "a cracking
tan".
