One of the best loved characters in Scottish comedy is set to return to our screens this festive season with a Christmas Special, as Gregor Fisher brings the Govan sage Rab C Nesbitt back to life once more.
But Rab appears to have changed - he’s ditched the drink, found religion and even discovered the cooker. The training shoes and the head-bandage might still be the same, but, underneath it, Rab is a new man who now insists “I can get high on a sunset…I skip with joy on seeing a lark”.
The Christmas special reunites the team that made Rab C Nesbitt such a smash-hit. The script is penned by Iain Pattison and directed by Colin Gilbert while Gregor Fisher reprises his role as the string-vested Govan philosopher. Elaine C Smith returns as his long-suffering wife Mary Doll as does Tony Roper as sleekit Valentino Jamesie Cotter, and Barbara Rafferty as Ella Cotter. The new faces in the Christmas special include Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot, Gangs of New York) as Mary’s old boyfriend Frank and Kathleen McDermott (Morvern Callar, Wedding Belles) as Gash (Andrew Fairlie)’s new wife Lorna.
The popularity and critical acclaim which Rab C Nesbitt received was reflected in the awards and nominations that the programme garnered. Over the course of its run Rab C Nesbitt won the Royal Television Society award for best sitcom, was commended at Rose D'Or and was the official BBC entry, was BAFTA nominated and won the BAFTA Scotland for best entertainment programme.

Rab C Nesbitt was a huge hit with audiences and viewing figures proved that those south of the border had no problems understanding the gist of Rab's Glasgow patter.
A philosopher in a string vest, viewers were bowled over by the character, and viewing figures of 4 to 6 million were the norm. The programme had a large and loyal following.
