The Comedy Unit run a night called Rough Cuts once a month at The Stand comedy club in the West End of Glasgow and also every 2 months at the Art's Theatre Comedy Cellar in Central London. We are also putting on the first ever Rough Cuts in Edinburgh on 23rd April 2008. The idea behind the nights is to allow emerging talent to be seen and to enable us to develop formats, sitcoms, and sketches by testing them out in front of a live audience. It’s a great way for us to find new comedy writing talent and that’s why we need you.
We’re always looking for sketches for the first section of the show that can be read through by the Rough Cuts players. There’s no constraint on topic or on style but there are a few things that you should bear in mind before submitting your sketch.
For more information on what we're looking for please have a look at the full writer's brief below.
Hello
Thanks to all who submitted to last month's show. Those who decided that comedy was far more important than watching some silly football match had a great night, and there was a lot of fantastic new material that justified their decision.
This month we're looking forward to the biggest comedy event of the year, the Edinburgh Fringe. Like last year, we're taking a live sketch show to Edinburgh and like last year we're asking you for the best possible sketches to go in it.
Think about sketches that will work live. The Fringe audience will be watching a lot of comedy over the course of the festival so think about characters and situations that are unique and surprising that will really stand out. There's no theme to the show so let your imagination run free and go for the really big laughs.
Good Luck
Chris
Some of the sketches submitted for Rough Cuts have gone on to be used in shows like Blowout, which won the Best Comedy Awards at the 2007 Scottish BAFTAS, BBC 3 sketch show Barely Legal, Chewin’ the Fat and The Karen Dunbar Show . Some writer/performers have even won commissions!
Tank Commander was a character created and performed by Greg McHugh. It was commissioned as a part of the E4 Funny Cuts season after a commissioner from Channel 4 saw it at Rough Cuts and we are now in the process of making a one off special Gary's War for More 4.
We don’t pay for the scripts that are used at Rough Cuts but you will receive payment if one of your sketches goes on to be used in a broadcast show.
Even if your scripts aren’t used, the team here at the Comedy Unit might see something they like in your style and earmark you for writers briefs on up coming projects. And on top of all of this Rough Cuts is a great night out!
