When you talk about all-round entertainers, the name Tam Cowan won't be too far from the top of the list. TV presenter, radio host, columnist, restaurant reviewer and accomplished after dinner speaker, Tam wears many different media hats. With his acerbic and ready wit, he has a common touch that appeals to the Scottish psyche.
From his hometown of Motherwell, Tam showed an early promise as a comedy writer, gaining writing credits for Radio Two's Week Ending whilst still at school. He was soon appearing in print with his popular football column at the Evening Times. He caught the attentions of BBC Radio Scotland who were looking for a co-host for a new football show called Off the Ball.
Stuart Cosgrove was already part of the project and as soon as Tam took to the mic, the chemistry was obvious. Many years, and two Sony Awards later, Tam and Stuart still entertain the Saturday lunchtime audience on the most popular show on Radio Scotland.
Tam moved successfully onto television in 2000 with Offside and his unique style and sense of fun made the show an instant hit. Now in its ninth series the show has notched up two Royal Television Society awards for best regional programme, as well as managing to entice the First Minister Jack McConnell to make an appearance and face Tam's acerbic tongue!
Tam also fronted Taxi for Cowan for BBC Scotland, and the two shows gained him another gong; this time a coveted Royal Television Society award for Best Regional Presenter.
Success on television hasn't dampened Tam's love of writing and he still pens his popular twice weekly column in the Daily Record along with his much admired restaurant reviews.
