Tom
Urie was born in Paisley in 1969, and started playing music from an
early age. He studied singing, piano and guitar at Perth Rock Music College,
graduating in June 1990. He has recently starred in the National Theatre
of Scotland’s stage adaptation of John Byrne’s seminal show Tutti
FruTti as Danny McGlone.
During a stint working for the Singing Kettle as a writer/performer, Tom got bitten by the acting bug, which led to three successful seasons at the Byre Theatre in St Andrews, during which he wrote and co-produced three Christmas shows, appeared as Baloo in the Jungle Book (not at all typecast!) and also worked as musical director for The Steamie. Tom was as an ugly sister at the King's Theatre, Glasgow in Cinderella, 2005/2006. He is also the long standing host of the hit theatre show, Singalonga Sound Of Music.
He has worked extensively as a session singer, working with artists as varied as Horse, Runrig, Carol Laula and Mylo, for whom he provided the vocals for the opening track to his smash hit Destroy Rock and Roll album. He has also performed on countless radio advertising campaigns, for clients like Heinekin, Howard Bedding, Optical Express and Budweiser. Tom performs regularly as a singer and pianist, with two weekly club residencies in Jumpin' Jaks, in Glasgow and Dumfries.
Since 1998, Tom has appeared in many TV and radio productions, namely Chewin' The Fat, Snoddy, Only
an Excuse? and The Karen Dunbar Show. Radio credits include Watson's Wind Up and Coming Home for Radio Scotland, and Ronan The Amphibian for BBC Radio 4. Tom also specialises in animation voices, having voiced features and shorts such as Rogue Farm, Head to Head with Britney Spears, Psychotica and The Three Musketeers.
Another hat Tom sometimes wears is that of composer/producer of original music. Most recent credits include Still Game (BBC), Tank Commander (Channel 4) and The Explainers (BBC Radio Scotland).
